Basic Principles of Logo Design

A logo is known as an identity that serves to instantly remind us of either a company or product around us. To infiltrate through the competitive market the logo needs to be defined by being distinctive, appropriate, simple in form and able to convey intended message. Therefore, it is important for the client and the designer as they develop and generate ideas for a logo to have this in mind.

The basic principles of logo design

Simplicity.  It is easy to identify a simple logo in its design. Simplicity allows the logo to be versatile and memorable. Effective logos feature something unexpected or unique without being overdrawn.

Memorable.  The logo design needs also to be remembered and differentiated from the others. Simple and appropriate logo are considered to be memorable. Memorability in a logo is attained by simple and  yet, appropriate logo.

Versatile. An effective logo is known by the ability to work across various mediums. As the logo is being used in various media it needs to maintain its function. Vector format logo is able to scaled to any size and are highly recommended. The simple way around this is to begin designing in black and white only as this allows you to focus on the concept and shape, rather than the subjective nature of color.

Appropriate. The elements and position in a logo should be appropriate for the intended purpose. A logo meant for a business firm might not be appropriate for kids toy company. Choice of font, illustration & color scheme define if a logo is appropriate

Enduring.  A logo that is effectively done needs to endure the test of time.
